In the Static Electricity unit the following information is taught: negatively charged items are attracted to neutral and positively charged items, and items with the same charge repel each other. Students will learn how to put an electric charge on an object and see how a neutral object can be changed into having a positive charge. They will also experience seeing an item gain and then drop a negative charge.
Enrichment activities are offered at the end of each experiment. They will encourage students to see what type of results they get when they explore different types of objects that will give items a negative charge. Will their results be similar or different when they give more time to charge a balloon, or touch different sides of an object with an electrically charged item? Students will be amazed that the weather has a direct effect on how much static electricity they can create. Even though they will be able to see it, they’ll be shocked when they see how they can bend water with static electricity!
